Joseph Miguel Campos/Martín del Campo casada con Antonia Manuela Péres—Poncitlán/Ocotlán, 1773

The line I am documenting goes through Joseph Ramón Campos, bap. 29 Apr 1779 in San Jacinto, Poncitlán, as were at least three of his siblings. In all cases, the names of the parents are similar: Dn. Migl. Campos, y de Dª María Manuela Peres (1774); Jph. Miguel Campos y da Anttª Peres (1779); Dn. José Migl. Campos y de Antª Francª Peres (1791); and Dn. Migl. Campos, y Dª Manuela Perez (1794). These baptisms took place at a time, unfortunately, when the abuelos are not named in the records.

Conveniently, also in Ocotlán, is this marriage: "... Dn Jph Migl. de Campos, Espl. de la jurisdicn. de Poncitlán h.l. de Dn Jph de Campos y dª francª Xabiera de Estrada con dª Antonia Manlª Peres esplª de Sta Clara h.l. de Dn Juº Manl. Peres y dª Rosa Mª fernandes deftos. ...".

Further complicating the search for proof of the parents of Joseph Ramón Campos is the fact that, in the subsequent baptisms of Joseph Ramón's children, the abuelos are named, but the names vary: Miguel Campos y Antonia Manuela Péres (1800); José Antonio Martín, y Antonia Ysidora (1801); Don Miguel Campos y de Doña Manuela Antonia Pérez (1804); José Antonio Martín del Campo y Antonia Ysidora Martín del Campo (1806); Don José Miguel Campos y de Doña Antonia Manuela Pérez (1808); Don Miguel Campos y de Doña Manuela Antonia Pérez (1810); José Miguel Campos y Dª Antonia Manuela Peres (1811); and José Miguel Campos y Antonia Pérez (1813).

Now, all of this is highly circumstantial evidence that the Joseph Miguel de Campos and Antonia Manuela Péres who married in Ocotlán in 1773 are the parents of 'my' Joseph Ramón Campos; but it is, still, circumstantial. The bit of evidence that confounds me the most at this point is the abuelo named José Antonio Martín in 1801; I say 'confounds' because (1) that is the only time the name 'Antonio' appears, (2) the apellido Martín is almost certainly Martín del Campo, from which, Campos derives, and (3) there is a documented baptism of Joseph Antonio Martín del Campo on 02 Apr 1733 in Jalos, son of Lázaro Martín del Camp y Tiscareño and María Felisiana Ximénes de Castro, and who, I had believed, may have been the father of 'my' Joseph Ramón, but which, I am now beginning seriously to doubt.

If anyone can shed any documented light on this puzzle, I should be most grateful.

Saludos,
Lawrence Bouett
