wedding certificate help

Currently some Mazahua indians in the State of Mexico use given names such as Jacobo and Mauricio as surnames. I don't know when and where this custom started.

These people are Indians (Yndios) and don't have last names. They have two first names
and the second names are abbreviated such as Pasql for Pasqual, Magda (for Magdalena?), Migl. for Miguel, etc.

Naming patterns for the Indios

At this time period, the Indios or Yndios did not have last names,, quite often they had two given first names, such as Maria Micaela or Jose Jacinto. For some of the indios, their second given name eventually became their last name and for others, it wasn't until they married into criollo or espanol families that they acquired a last name.

Some of the indios took on the surname of their owners. If they had been enslaved or were working for their patrones who were the hacendados, they took on their patrones' last names.
